Safeguarding Singapore’s F&B Industry
As Singapore prepares for the 8th edition of The Workplace Safety and Health Conference (WSH) on 11 September 2024 at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, the focus on food and workplace safety has never been more critical. This year’s conference serves as a reminder that safety protocols are not merely a box to be ticked—they are essential to the smooth operation of industries, especially in high-risk sectors like food and beverage (F&B).
Recent incidents, such as a food poisoning case involving a major tech company and a gastroenteritis outbreak at a school camp, have highlighted the critical need for robust safety practices in food handling and preparation. Beyond food hygiene, workplace safety in the F&B sector involves much more.
From the correct use of kitchen equipment to proper lifting techniques and comprehensive knowledge of safety regulations, there are numerous factors that play a role in ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for all. SHATEC Orchard encourages F&B establishments to enrol their current employees in refresher courses on food and workplace safety to ensure they stay aligned with the NEA’s latest guidelines and food safety practices.
To support this, SHATEC Orchard is stepping up with two fundamental courses for F&B professionals; the “Fundamental Workplace Safety and Health for F&B Operations” and the “Food Safety Course Level 1 (Refresher).” These courses are designed to arm employees with both the theoretical understanding and practical skills needed to meet the highest standards of health and safety.
New employees entering the F&B industry, including food handlers in both retail and non-retail sectors, are required to complete the Food Safety Course Level 1. In this course, individuals will learn essential skills such as safe food handling and storage, maintaining personal hygiene, and ensuring the cleanliness of equipment and premises. After completing this initial course, certified food handlers are required to attend a refresher course five years after the basic certification expires, and subsequently every ten years.
As food safety becomes an increasingly important priority, SHATEC Orchard’s courses offer a proactive solution for F&B establishments. These courses not only help businesses protect their customers and employees but also ensure compliance with regulations, which is key to sustaining a successful business in today’s F&B competitive landscape.
