WSET Level 3 Award in Sake


About This Course

The WSET® Level 3 Award in Sake is designed to give a thorough understanding of the factors that account for the style and quality of sake as well as its commercial importance in the Japanese and export markets. The qualification will assist those who are required to make professional evaluations of sakes with regard to their quality and commercial value. The qualification provides the in-depth knowledge required to underpin job skills and competencies, for example in product selection on the retail and hospitality sectors.

Session: 5 Full Days;
Day 1 – 4: 9am – 5pm, Day 5 9am – 2.30pm & Closed-book Exam: 9.30am – 12.30pm

Who Should Attend

An advanced level qualification for professionals working in the sake industry and for sake enthusiasts.


Entry Requirements
Participant(s) must be at least 18 years old and above, i.e. legal drinking age in Singapore, to partake in any of the WSET® Programmes.


Participant(s), for religious, health or any other reason(s), who do not wish to sample any alcohol during the course, may do so (only applicable for WSET Level 1 & 2 Programmes).

What You'll Learn

You will be able to describe the characteristics of the principal sake categories and give information concerning the key factors influencing style and quality. They will consequently be in a position to advise management, to answer customer queries authoritatively, and to make informed selections of sakes in a variety of situations.

Course Outline

You will learn:


  • The main techniques that are used in the production of sake and how they influence style and quality
  • The principal and specialty categories of sake
  • The sake industry and the commercial importance of sake in the Japanese and export markets
  • The principles behind the storage, selection and service of sake


  • How to taste sake, and evaluate quality, identify and price, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Sake® (SAT)

Course Structure

  • Methodology

    This qualification has a minimum requirement of 42.25 hours of study time, with 35 classroom hours (including 2.5 assessment hours) conducted in person and 7.25 hours of self-study.

  • Assessment

    Unit 1 is assessed by a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions and a short-written answer paper. Unit 2 is assessed by a blind tasting of 2 sakes.


    This qualification is regulated by Ofqual.

    Results will be issued based on the following timeline:
    Level 3: 12 weeks from assessment date


    SHATEC will inform participants of your results via email once we have received the Gradelist from WSET®. Your certificates and lapel pin will come at a later date and you will be advised of the collection details once we have received it.


    Re-sit of Exam
    Please note that if you have not passed the exam, you will be required to attend a re-sit.


    The exam re-sit fee is as follows:
    Level 3 (Theory): S$ 175.00 per sitting (incl. GST)
    Level 3 (Tasting): S$ 175.00 per sitting (incl. GST)
    Level 3 (Both Theory and Tasting): S$ 300.00 (incl. GST)

  • Certificate

    Upon successful completion of the examination you will receive a WSET® certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET® certified logo.

5Absentee Payroll

Absentee Payroll rate at S$4.50 per hour, capped at S$100,000 per enterprise per calendar year

* In accordance with the Budget 2022 announcement, the GST rate will be increased from:

(i) 7% to 8% with effect from 1 Jan 2023; and

(ii) 8% to 9% with effect from 1 Jan 2024.

9% GST will apply to full payments received by SHATEC from 1 January 2024 onwards.
Full payments received by SHATEC before 1 January 2024 will have no adjustment to the 8% GST.

1 Singaporeans and Singapore PRs, aged 21 and above, will be eligible for up to 70% SSG funding. Funding is subjected to SSG’s prevailing corporate policies and final approval.

2 Singaporeans may also utilize available funds within their Post-Secondary Education Account (PSEA) or SkillsFuture Credits (where applicable) to offset total net course fee payable. All Singaporeans aged 25 and above can use their $500 SkillsFuture Credit from the government to pay for a wide range of approved skills-related courses. Visit the SkillsFuture Credit website to choose from the courses available on the SkillsFuture Credit course directory.

3 The SkillsFuture MES is for Singaporeans aged 40 years old and above.

4 Training support will be extended to Long Term Visit Pass Plus (LTVP+) Holders with effect from 1 October 2021. The LTVP+ scheme applies to lawful foreign spouses of Singapore Citizens (SCs) with (i) at least one SC child or are expecting one from the marriage, or at least three years of marriage, and (ii) where the SC sponsor is able to support the family. LTVP+ holders will be identified with their green visit pass cards, with the word ‘PLUS’ on the back of the card.

5 SME companies are required to log-in to Enterprise Portal for Jobs and Skills to update their SME status if they have not done so. All companies will be notified to log in to the portal to declare monthly salary and hours worked per week in order to receive Absentee Payroll.

6 Companies and individuals are liable for the full course fee in the event that the SSG funding and subsidy are not approved.

7 Class commencement is subjected to minimum class size met. Public holidays are excluded, where applicable

8 Eligible companies can offset the additional out-of-pocket expenses with the SkillsFuture Enterprise Credit (SFEC). Please refer to for more information.
