About This Course

The WSET® Level 1 Award in Spirits will assist those who need a basic familiarity with the main styles and categories, for example people who work with spirits in the retail and hospitality sectors.

 

Course duration: 7 hours

 

Session: 1 Full Day; 9am – 4.15pm & Closed-book Exam: 4.15pm – 5pm

Who Should Attend

This course is a beginner level introduction to spirits suitable for those starting a career or pursuing an interest in spirits.

 

Entry Requirements
Participant(s) must be at least 18 years old and above, i.e. legal drinking age in Singapore, to partake in any of the WSET® Programmes.

 

Participant(s), for religious, health or any other reason(s), who do not wish to sample any alcohol during the course, may do so (only applicable for WSET® Level 1 & 2 Programmes).

What You'll Learn

You will be able to list the principal spirits categories, state their defining characteristics, and know the key principles involved in creating a balanced cocktail. They will consequently be able to answer customer queries and provide recommendations for spirits service.

Course Outline

The course covers the following content:

  • The basic principles of spirit production
  • The main types and styles of spirits
  • How to serve spirits
  • Factors affecting the flavour of spirits
  • How to describe spirits using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits® (SAT)

Course Structure

  • Methodology

    This qualification has a minimum requirement of 6 classroom hours (including a 45 minutes assessment) conducted in-person.

  • Assessment

    Assessment is by a closed-book exam of 30 multiple-choice questions. This qualification is regulated by Ofqual.

    Results
    Results will be issued based on the following timeline:
    Level 1: 10 weeks from assessment date

     

    SHATEC will inform participants of your results via email once we have received the Gradelist from WSET®. Your certificates and lapel pin will come at a later date and you will be advised of the collection details once we have received them.

     

    Re-sit of Exam
    Please note that if you have not passed the exam, you will be required to attend a re-sit (in order to be eligible for any course fee funding).

     

    The exam re-sit fee is as follows:
    Level 1 (Theory): S$ 145.00 per sitting (incl. GST)

  • Certificate

    Upon successful passing the examination, you will receive a WSET® certificate and lapel pin.

* In accordance with the Budget 2022 announcement, the GST rate will be increased from:

(i) 7% to 8% with effect from 1 Jan 2023; and

(ii) 8% to 9% with effect from 1 Jan 2024.

9% GST will apply to full payments received by SHATEC from 1 January 2024 onwards.
Full payments received by SHATEC before 1 January 2024 will have no adjustment to the 8% GST.
